IDEX — Independent Dual Extrusion
Optional on all models. Enables water-soluble supports, automatic filament changeover, and breakaway support material — unlocking geometries that standard single-head FFF cannot achieve.

Soluble Support Structures

Print internal supports in Modix Soluble Filament (MSF) that dissolve in water. Unlocks deep cavities, undercuts, and internal channels — geometries that would require hours of manual support removal or are simply impossible to clean any other way.

Automatic Filament Changeover

When the primary spool runs out during an overnight or multi-day job, the printer automatically continues on the secondary head. Jobs no longer need to pause or fail because of spool depletion — critical for unattended production runs.

Breakaway Supports

Use a physically separating support material that snaps off cleanly without chemicals or soaking. Faster post-processing, works with any primary material combination.

Build Volume with IDEX Active

BIG-60 / 120X / 120Z / 180X:
Single head: 570 mm Y  →  Dual: 525 mm Y

BIG-Meter / Everest:
Single head: 970 mm Y  →  Dual: 925 mm Y

Why Modix Soluble Filament (MSF) over PVA? MSF is engineered specifically for large-format, long-duration prints. It resists moisture absorption over hours of exposure, clogs significantly less, and is optimized for the Griffin printhead — making it the reliable choice for multi-day IDEX print jobs.
07
Power Requirements & Installation

Sales FAQ
Key questions from buyers evaluating large-format 3D printing for their organization.
Value & ROI
What is the ROI case for owning a large-format printer vs. outsourcing?
Outsourcing large parts typically costs $500–$5,000+ per part depending on size and material, with 2–6 week lead times. A single BIG-60 pays for itself after a handful of jobs. Beyond cost, in-house printing gives you speed (hours or days vs. weeks), design iteration freedom, and confidentiality — no CAD files leave your facility. Most customers see full payback within 3–12 months of regular use.
How does large-format FFF compare to CNC machining for large parts?
CNC is ideal for metal parts requiring very tight tolerances. For large plastic or composite parts — housings, tooling, fixtures, molds, architectural models — large-format FFF is typically 5–20× faster to produce and dramatically cheaper per part. Modix printers also handle complex geometries (undercuts, internal channels with IDEX) that would require expensive multi-axis CNC setups.
What industries use Modix printers?
Modix printers are used across automotive (body panels, jigs, fixtures), aerospace (ground support equipment, tooling), architecture (scale and full-size models), defence and government (structural prototypes, unmanned systems), marine, medical (large prosthetics, training models), education and R&D, and film/prop production. The common thread is needing a large, repeatable, functional part — quickly and in-house.
Getting Started
How difficult is assembly? What level of technical skill is required?
Assembly requires basic mechanical aptitude — the ability to follow detailed video guides and handle tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers. No electronics or programming expertise is required. Most customers complete assembly in 2–5 days depending on the model. Modix provides step-by-step assembly manuals, 3D assembly models you can rotate and inspect, and live video support from our engineering team throughout the process.
What support is included after purchase?
Modix provides dedicated technical support with engineers available in North American and European time zones. Support includes: video call assistance for assembly and troubleshooting, access to the comprehensive support portal at support.modix3d.com, an active community forum, and ongoing firmware and documentation updates. Modix also offers professional consultancy services to help customers accelerate specific application goals.
Can I get a print sample or demonstration before buying?
Yes. Modix can produce print samples using similar or representative models to demonstrate capabilities. We do not require NDA signing for preliminary project files used in print demonstrations — all shared materials are treated with full confidentiality. Contact our sales team to arrange a demonstration.
What is the typical lead time and delivery process?
Lead times vary by model and current stock — contact Modix sales for current availability. All models ship internationally. Larger models (BIG-180X, BIG-Meter, Everest) ship on pallets via freight and include detailed unpacking and placement guidance. Modix offers free shipping to USA and Europe on select models.
Capabilities & Competitive
Can Modix printers produce functional end-use parts?
Yes — this is a primary use case. With engineering materials such as ABS, ASA, Nylon, PC, and carbon fiber composites, Modix printers produce structurally functional parts used in real-world applications. Customers produce tooling jigs, end-use housings, marine and automotive components, structural brackets, and more. The key is matching material choice to the mechanical and thermal requirements of the application.
How does Modix outperform the competition?
Four key differentiators: (1) Robust, proven engineering — Modix has been selling large-format printers since 2017 and customers from our first year of production are still running reliably. (2) The Griffin printhead family — particularly the Ultra Flow, which delivers up to 6× faster throughput than competing systems. (3) True upgrade path — buy a BIG-60 today and upgrade the printhead, add IDEX, add an enclosure, or upgrade to a larger frame without replacing the whole machine. (4) Responsive B2B support — dedicated support engineers in NA and EU time zones who understand industrial applications.
Is Modix suitable for government, defence, or security-sensitive environments?
Yes. Modix is TTA compliant for government and defence cybersecurity requirements. The printer runs entirely on-premises with no cloud dependency. The open-source RRF firmware is fully auditable. For air-gapped facilities, an Ethernet-only controller board (no WiFi) is available, and the printer can be operated entirely offline via microSD card. CE certification and EMC testing also satisfy most government facility procurement requirements.
What's the Difference Between Models?
How do I choose between BIG Series (filament) and MAMA FGF (pellet)?
Choose BIG Series if: you need material flexibility (a wide range of filament types and brands), precision and surface quality matter, you're doing prototyping, R&D, or varied production runs. Choose MAMA FGF if: you need maximum throughput at minimum material cost, you're producing large industrial parts at volume, and your application can work with granulate-grade material. The technologies are fundamentally different — BIG uses standard 1.75 mm filament; MAMA uses raw plastic pellets at a fraction of the per-kg cost.
Is the BIG Series backward compatible with Gen3?
Yes. The Unified Core concept means Griffin printheads, IDEX kits, and most add-ons are compatible with Gen3 machines. Modix offers a full V3→V4 upgrade kit that upgrades the X and Y motion systems, the Y gantry (to enable IDEX), the Griffin printhead, and adds the DUEX expansion board as default. The Z motion system remains from V3 in the upgrade path.
