Automotive and aviation

Built for automotive and aerospace tooling, patterns and prototypes.

Styling bucks, layup tools, patterns and fixtures are where sectioning, bonding and outsourced CNC cost the most time. The XL-3000 prints them in one piece. Functional flight or road parts have their own requirements: the application review says what applies to yours.

Styling bucks and panel prototypes

Styling bucks and panel prototypes

Full-size bucks, panel prototypes and wind-tunnel shapes without bonded segments.

Layup tools and molds

Layup tools and molds

Low-temperature tools and patterns, printed slightly oversize and finished.

Aerospace tooling and mock-ups

Aerospace tooling and mock-ups

Layup tools, cabin mock-ups and fit-check prototypes at full scale, light enough to lift by hand.

Fixtures and checking jigs

Fixtures and checking jigs

Assembly fixtures as long as the part they hold, on a static bed.

Bonded from sections

  • ×Jigs and fixtures built just to hold the sections
  • ×Bond lines that often become the weak point
  • ×Hours of fitting, filling and sanding per joint
  • ×Tolerance stacking across every interface

Printed on an XL-3000

  • ✓One continuous part, up to 3,000 mm
  • ✓No bonded joints between printed sections
  • ✓Post-processing on the surface, not the seams
  • ✓No tolerance build-up from aligning sections

    New to pellets?

    How pellet printing works.

Most MAMA customers have never printed from pellets. Here is the whole process, what changes compared with filament, and how to design for it. Onboarding covers every step on your own part.

    01Alapanyag

Plastic pellets, 3 to 5 mm, the same feedstock injection molding uses. Virgin, recycled or filled.

    02színek

Masterbatch is mixed in by weight. About 5% white with 2 to 3% black gives a dark gray.

    03Szárítsa

PLA dries at 45 °C for 8 hours. PETG and nylon pick up moisture in minutes, so they dry every run.

    04takarmány

Compressed air carries pellets from the hopper to the head. A level sensor keeps it topped up.

    05Melt and print

A screw with three heat zones melts the pellets, cooler at the top and hotter at the nozzle. Beads are 3 to 14 mm wide.

    06befejez

Sand, drill, seal and paint. Wood-filled grades finish like pattern-shop material.

Designing for pellets: show the 8 rules
    Overhangs under 45°, no supports

Thick pellet layers sag past 45° and pellet supports fuse to the part. Orient it, chamfer under ledges, or use Dual Filament (IDEX) for soluble supports.

    Hollow first

On a large part the inside is where the hours go. Shell every solid; 10 to 25% infill gives most of the strength, above 50% is paying for nothing.

    The nozzle sets the scale

1 mm: up to 2.5 mm line, 0.75 mm layer. 3 mm: 8 mm line, 2 mm layer. 5 mm: 14 mm line, 3 mm layer. Walls in whole beads.

    Warp is a length problem

Round every corner (5 to 10 mm over 500 mm), break up flat floors, keep walls within a factor of 2, let the part cool on the bed.

    Scale for shrinkage, then measure

    Scale = 100 ÷ (100 − shrink %). A 1,000 mm part at 0.8% shrinks 8 mm. Calibrate at full size, X and Y apart from Z.

Leave stock where a tool will touch

Half a bead in XY and half a layer in Z on faces you machine, solid pads under bores, critical faces vertical.

    Folyamatos szerszámpályák

Spiral (vase) mode and single walls keep extruder pressure steady and cut print time.

    Estimate before you slice

Hours = part mass ÷ real throughput (1.15 to 1.4 kg/h on our logged prints), plus 10 to 30% for travel and slow layers.

    A gép

    Two print technologies, one platform.

Pellet for throughput, filament for detail. The MAMA XL-3000 takes either head on the same motion system, so the application decides and the decision is never permanent.

Why pelletsPellets cost a fraction of equivalent filament grades (see Pellets versus filament). On a 10 kg part, that decides whether producing in-house pays.

Door switches are part of the safety loop. Open a door in production and motion stops.

    Keyswitch modes

Production: doors locked, printing allowed. Maintenance: doors open, manual moves and calibration.

    E-stop on a safety relay

A hardware emergency stop loop, plus a status tower: green running, amber maintenance, red stop.

    Watched while it prints

Pellet level, clog and cooling alarms pause the job and wait for the operator.

    Single Pellet Head

Throughput. Large parts, low material cost, composite and recycled feedstock.

    Single Filament Head

Detail. Finer features, tighter tolerances, smoother surfaces.

    Dual Filament (IDEX)

Two independent Griffin Ultra heads, soluble supports, auto filament change.

    FAQ

    Pricing, samples and support.

Why is there no price on this page?
Because the quote follows the application. What a MAMA costs depends on the print head, the add-ons your material needs and the services in the program. We scope it after the review, so the number you get is the number for your part.
Is the sample print really paid?
Yes. It is a paid engineering service, quoted per part once we have seen the geometry and agreed the material. You are paying for engineering time and machine time on a real part.
    Does the machine arrive assembled?
Yes. Built to order, tested and calibrated, with the print profile from your approved sample loaded. A Modix engineer then commissions it on site and trains your team.
Can we maintain and upgrade it ourselves?
Yes, and that is the point of a modular platform. Print heads, electronics and extrusion systems are serviceable and upgradeable by your own team, with spare-part kits available.
Pellet or filament, how do we choose?
Pellet for throughput and material cost on large parts, filament for finer features and finish. The review answers it for your part, and the machine takes either head, so the decision is not permanent.
Why an assessment and not a quick form?
Because a pellet application engineer spends real time on every MAMA request: the part, the material, the finish and your site, usually in a video call. The more you tell us up front, the more useful that time is for you, and the faster you get a real answer.
We have never printed with pellets. Is that a problem?
No. Most MAMA customers start there. Onboarding covers drying, feeding, print profiles and maintenance on your own part, and support continues for the life of the machine.
Can it run recycled material or our own compounds?
Yes. The pellet head takes virgin, recycled and filled pellets, plus masterbatch for color. The assessment and the sample print tell you whether your compound prints and how it must be dried.
What does it need on site?
Floor space, a 400 V three-phase supply on a dedicated 32 A circuit, Ethernet, and for pellet configurations a small air compressor (3.5 HP, 24 liter) sourced locally. Sites on a 480 V supply use a 30 kVA isolation transformer, which we specify with you.
What happens if the feed runs out mid-print?
Pellet level and clog detection pause the job and wait for an operator. Refill or clear it and the print continues from where it stopped.
